Accidentally Delicious

Posted in Personal stuff on September 29th, 2008 by thrane

In lack of any real news, here is a small story about a little spir-of-the-moment kitchen experiment, which turned out quite nice.

I as probably reinventing the wheel, but hey, who doesn’t like wheels?

I was making my usual, oven baked mix of chopped root vegetable, when I discovered that I actually had the ingredients in my fridge for a, suddenly, much more desirable omelette. Having cooked the vegetables in the oven for 45 minutes, I was too greedy to simply discard them, so I decided to fry some of the baked roots and pour the omelette on top. After a few minutes it seemed that the bottom roots would get burned before the omelette had cooked. In a panic, I decided to through everything (skillet included) in the oven, which was hot, in order to let it bake from both sides. Alternatively, in case it failed, I could probably manage to forget it was in there, and run off to get a pizza.

Luckily it didn’t fail, and I accurately managed to reproduce the experiment this evening. It turned out as you can se in the picture above.

I assume its actually vegematerian, or whatever “they” (who ever they are) call it ;)

So there you have it – or not.

Cheers,

So I have joined the photo trend ..

I have very recently discovered photography, or perhaps, more accurately most of my peers have discovered it for me. It seams that I have underestimated the fun and artistic challenges which comes with photography. So I have decided to give it a try as well.

Nikon-D40-intro-main-2-400.jpg

My newly acquired Google prise, set me off with a new Nikon D40 Digital SLR camera (spejlrefleks in Danish) which was on sale at one of the local photo shops here in Aalborg. Although the Nikon D40 supposedly is an entry level DSLR camera, it seams to do its job very nicely – surely better than me at this point, as I’m very much a novice in this field.

Although the resent couple of days of my life have been experienced mostly though the lens of my camera, I have yet to produce a master peace .. and I find this strange! don’t you?. Nevertheless a few pictures has turned out ok, and being the computer scientist (read nerd) that I am and living in this digital day and age, I have of course created an on-line photo gallery! I’m quite happy with the result so fare, but the ultimate goal would of cause be, to have the necessary skills to take pictures like the ones you can find here.

Fun with new Camera

If you for some reason feel the need to link to my photo album, notice that I changed the URL (address) from http://picasaweb.google.com/kampkoder to http://picasaweb.google.com/claus.thrane

TexShop On Mac

Posted in Academic/professional, Personal stuff on January 18th, 2007 by thrane

This is a much a reminder to my self as it is a blog entry. In the beginning of this semester I bought a MacBook, and ofcause my work requires me to use latex, in order to write my project, and other stuff. I’m normally a Linux (Debian) user so I’m having a hard time leaving the terminal window and doing stuff the Mac way.

One of the tasks I’m still urging to do in a terminal, is to compile my latex projects using make. But since I did make the move from Emacs to the TexShop editor (it has a nice, compile and view updated feature, out of the box) I needed to get it to use my Makefile which I, by now, have use a coupe of years perfecting to my use. The TexShop manual has a few suggestions, on how to do this, e.g. with the %!TEX TS-program=xxx command, but non of these seamed to work for me.

The “hack” im proposing here, is to add a small script to /usr/local/teTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin-current/ containing

After installing texshop and tetex using fink, create a script e.g latexproject in /sw/bin/
containing something like this:

#!/bin/sh
PROJECTDIR=`pwd`
cd $PROJECTDIR
make pdf

Now if you open your tex files from a finder window, which I do, the pwd command will evaluate to the path of the project. Thus you are all set to use your old Makefiles for multiple projects (given they all have pdf target :) ). All you need to do, is  to modify the preferences as follows:
texshop.jpg

Now, there is probably an easier way to to this – but hey, it works for me!

Follow up: It seems that this blog entry has been googled quite a few times, which has lead me to think that it might be worth the time to make this nano-howto (ie. very small) more complete. If you have found this approach didn’t work for you (which it probably didn’t ), please write a comment stating what you needed and maybe how you fixed it

Back in the game ..

So summer is finally over and I’m back at university. Since I graduated this summer I have been catching up on some long awaited R n’ R. With that well and out of the way, I have been spending time putting my new B.Sc degree to work, developing software for the university (AAU-Portalen). I have been working there for a while now but this summer a fellow student and I, was hired full time for one month. As usual we did a lot of patching, scripting, Log analyzing (this time with polliwog – the software not the tadpole ) but we actually also did a very exciting project using the “newly” acquired Google Enterprise (development) box at AAU. Morten (my colleague) did a small introduction to the software we wrote – if it should be of any interest to you feel free to download it and send me (or us) comments.

Now that summer is over, I’m back in university and started up the project for my master thesis, It will be in the area of Code verification with possible application in the UPPAAL verification tool. I’m dooing the project in collaboration with Uffe Soerensen a fellow student whom I’m now writing my 7 project with. The project is supervised by Professor Kim G. Larsen. Although It’s really early in the process I’m already really excited by this project.
Since I have been really lazy at writing posts this summer, I might as well get it all over with in one go. Hopefully I will have the time from now on, to publish more often. The final project I would like to mention here is one which actually started in the early spring this year Uffe, Morten and I (you will notice that I mention these guys quite often – and here I go again) started helping with a local mall on their way into the 21th century by installing a file server allowing them to share file and work at home when required. It turned out that they liked not living in the dark-ages and we have now been hired to develop a management system allowing them to communicate with mall customers and renting shops alike (more on this venture later – hopefully).

One down 3 to go

Christmas Spoiles

Posted in Personal stuff on December 28th, 2005 by thrane

So Christmas is over (barely) and what do we have to show for it? Well personally I have got a few more pounds which I will have to get rid of when this masive amount of show (notice the irony) is gone. Apart from all the eating Christmass for me, here in Denmark, have been quite relaxed, well that is ofcause if you don’t count the Christmass shopping, a small university project, the family gatherings and the thorne in my side called “exames in January”.

But there were spoils – of course there were, there were tones of yummy food and the presents (wee). As always the food at Christmas time is excellent and this year even though I no longer get toys as often as I use to, I was lucky. I got a new keyboard; a Cooler Master Q Alloy KeyboardKeyboard which I am now trying to master while remaining cool.

All in all it has been a pretty god Christmas for me hope It has been just as good to you.
